6 ways to cultivate healthy fertility

If you're trying to get pregnant, you may be looking for ways to boost your fertility and increase your chances of conceiving. Here are a few simple tips to help boost fertility in women:

  1. Eat a nutrient dense diet: A containing some fruits, certain vegetables- specifically low oxalate ones, good amounts of healthy fats(fish, good sourced red meat, coconut oil, eggs, avocado, extra virgin olive oil) and adequate protein( 1 gram per lb of body weight) can help to improve fertility. Avoid sugar, most people will benefit from avoiding gluten and avoid processed seed oils- canola, safflower, etc...

  2. Maintain a healthy weight: Being overweight or underweight can impact fertility. Aim for a healthy weight by exercising regularly and eating a diet suited for your activity and constitution keeping in mind #1.

  3. Stress Modulate: Stress can have a negative impact on fertility. Negative thoughts put us in to fight/flight mode which this left unchecked has been shown to increase inflammatory markers and turn on genes for chronic disease and cancer. Try stress-reducing activities such as yoga, walking outside in the sun, meditation, exercise, hot baths, sauna, cold plunge, to help improve your overall well-being and boost fertility.

  4. Get your spine checked: If you have nervous system tension from an old injury or current injury it can change the nerve supply to hormone producing glands including thyroid, adrenals, ovaries etc... this changes hormone cascades and blood supply to those organs. Getting it specifically corrected by a chiropractor that is trained well can help move you in the right direction.

  5. Address your first energy center: Energy centers are collections of nerves that reside at certain points in the body- at several points in the body (Sacral, solarplexus, heart, throat to name a few) there are the equivalent or even more neurons located there than the brain itself. Eastern medicine call these areas chakras. This area is related to reproduction, elimination, sexuality, sexual identity etc... trauma to this area being physical or mental/emotional can put it out of balance. Going to see a well trained acupuncturist, somatic therapist or any other practitioner that is trained in assessing and addressing these things should be consulted.

  6. Get enough sleep: Adequate sleep is vital for overall health, well-being, and fertility. Women need on average 8-9 hours per night for optimal hormonal regulation. See blog post on "physics of physical health and how to build to last" for more detail.
